Chapter Nine

The rush of endorphins, and my sore arms and legs felt fantastic, as I got off the elliptical in the workout room and headed up to the shower. The workout had been familiar, as I’d always kept myself in shape and toned. I both had to and wanted to, lifeguards had to be in good shape. Plus, I liked the way I looked, even more so now that it was my true visage.

I’d also noticed something last night that was almost startling, as Katie and I danced and had a good time. I was a better dancer, and far more graceful on my feet without that damned curse. In fact, I hadn’t tripped, dropped anything, or had a klutzy moment since it’d been removed. New world, new person, everything felt new, even myself between the makeover, my magic, and the lack of the curse. No more college either, and that made me feel even more disconnected, as that constant in my life for the last four years went away.

In short, it was more than just the magic, almost everything in my life had changed the last week and few days.

So, the workout was very grounding for me. That and perhaps my job as a lifeguard were the only familiar things in my life.

I jumped into the shower and sighed as the hot water beat down onto my body. It felt really good after a workout as I soaped up and sluiced off the sweat. Water was also the source of my power and refreshing.

I grabbed some of it, and I coated the wall with a small square of water, about two feet tall by three feet wide. Then I imagined, pictured, and willed to see Aurora. I hadn’t yet tried it, since Katie suggested I might be able to scry through water.

The magic surged through me, and the water filled with a picture of the club. It looked so different during the day, a large white brick building with chips and fading paint in places, and the garish sign was off and not glowing in the morning sun.

That was one thing I liked, my magic was easy, relatively. If it could accomplish something, it wasn’t hard to make it happen, once I understood it was possible. Simple desire and focus was the key. The water flickered from place to place, as I fed it magic. I learned I could scry anyplace I’d been, but nowhere else. I also tried to scry Caroline, Ben, Tara, the bouncer Dan, and Mark, but none of that worked at all.

I was however, able to scry objects, as well as places, but only things that belonged to me. I could scry my car, the clothes in my closet, the knickknacks in my bedroom, and things like that. Of course, the point of scrying was so I could teleport somewhere without getting caught. Or at least, one of the points.

Thing was, a sheet of water hanging in the air and acting like a television on mute wasn’t exactly subtle.
